The NTUC was set up in 1961, following a split in the labour movement over whether Singapore should join the Federation of Malaysia and become independent within a large political entity.
As a follow-up to the Modernisation Seminar, the NTUC began forming cooperatives in the 1970s.
The early 1980s saw the NTUC restructuring our unions.
The setting up of the Singapore Institute of Labour Studies (SILS) in 1990 marked the fulfillment of our long desire to have a labour college.
