Model Partnership Awards, Individual Category: Johari Jamal
Johari Jamal, 38, from the Keppel Employees Union (KEU) was a Provost Personnel with the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) for two years before he joined Keppel Shipyard Limited (Tuas) as a Safety Co-ordinator.
One of his greatest challenges was his lack of relevant experience and knowledge on fire-fighting and rescue operations.
In partnership with the company and Mohammad Hafif Othman from Keppel Shipyard, Mr Johari was given on-the-job training and training courses which enabled him to pick up the knowledge along the way.
He also had help from mentors who willingly shared their experiences. Mr Johari was promoted to several positions in two years and now holds the position of a Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Supervisor.
He was also conferred the Best Employee Award for two consecutive years. Lately, Mr Johari also contributed to the design of the fire box and fire rack which are used to store the fire hoses on board vessels. They help to eliminate safety hazards and also minimise the damage of the fire hoses and the cost to replace them which resulted in cost savings to the company.
The NTUC May Day Model Partnership Awards 2012 recognises awardees for their efforts in three main categories: raising productivity and gains sharing; increased job worth through skills upgrading; and developing a resilient and adaptive workforce.
